Hutchinson, KS—If you want to be part of the popular ancestry search trend, you may not need to look any further than the local library. The Hutchinson Public Library  is now a FamilySearch Affiliate Library, which means it has access to more genealogy resources to help you make more family discoveries. FamilySearch is a world leader in family history.

There are only a few hundred affiliate libraries in the country. The designation means local library patrons will now have greater and more convenient access to the wealth of genealogical resources available through FamilySearch. The popular web service has over 6 billion searchable names and 2 billion images of historical genealogical records—and you get the helpful assistance of library staff. FamilySearch adds over 300 million free genealogical records and images online yearly from all over the world and manages the famous FamilySearch Library in Salt Lake City. It has amassed billions of birth, marriage, death, census, land and court records from more than 130 countries to help you discover and make family connections.

Libraries are wonderful local gathering places for learning. We are excited to have Hutchinson Public Library as our newest FamilySearch Affiliate Library.  It will help FamilySearch expand opportunities for fun, personal discoveries and family connections to the local community,” said Paul Nauta, FamilySearch Public Relations Manager.

Hutchinson Public Library is hosting a three part book series March through May exploring “Ghost Stories.”

Ghost stories arouse the same emotion that draws us to mystery fiction: the desire to solve the problem of the past. People tell stories to try to explain what death is, where loved ones go, why the good suffer. The books in this series represent some classic explanations.

Members of the public are invited to attend these free programs, which will take place at the Hutchinson Public Library on the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm.

The series is sponsored by Humanities Kansas (HK), a nonprofit cultural organization, as part of its Talk About Literature in Kansas (TALK) program. HK is furnishing the books and discussion leaders for the Hutchinson Public Library TALK series. For more information about HK, visit www.humanitieskansas.org

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill (1983)In this modern ghost story all the classic elements are brought together: the isolated mansion, rumor-haunted; the dark past, described in riffs from yellowed letters; the young innocent charged with telling a dead woman’s story, and the devastating final turn.

Discussion Leader: Sheena Hernandez

Sheena Hernandez is a professor of English at Garden City Community College in southwest Kansas. She received her master’s degree in English from Fort Hays State University. Her background includes English Language and Linguistic studies, composition, and various literary genres. She considers herself a generalist with an interest in cultural, historical, and post-colonial studies.

Pick up the book and register for the discussion at the Public Service Desk. The discussion will be held in the auditorium on the library’s second floor. This discussion may be attended in-person or virtually.

We have a wide range of topics for all reading tastes this month! If you’re in the mood for a romance, check out Happiness for Beginners and join the discussion with the Salt City Readers club later this month. If romance has failed you and you find yourself looking for more of a classic slasher, check out Final Girls and talk it out with the Mystery Mavens.

Tell us what you’re reading this month by tagging Hutchinson Public Library on Facebook!

Our 641 Dinner Club is meeting next month on February 10. For February’s theme, we wanted to create a warm, cozy feeling. We couldn’t think of anything that would fit that more than a classic Italian bistro. Often featured in rom-coms, the food of Italy reminds us of warmth, family, and love. That makes it a perfect choice for our February theme.

Join in on the fun of cooking and learning new recipes with us! Register for the 641 Club!
